Feasting on God’s Word

The word of God is a gut hook. It’s as sharp as a two-edged sword that cuts us to the heart. It’s a brightly lit mirror that brings our repulsive marred souls into sharp relief. It’s a light that shines into our darkness, exposing us for who we really are.

It is wondrously beautiful, deeply insightful, surprisingly simple, and profoundly complex. It makes a wise man look simple and the simple man wise. It is enlightening and more desirable than gold. His word is perfect and altogether righteous. Read More

Unlocking The Meaning Of The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper is an esteemed part of our worship on the first day of the week. It is communion with the body of Christ and time we use for solemn reflection on the importance of the Messiah and His death. The Lord’s Supper is something that should be observed each and every first day of the week (Acts 20:7). However, there is a danger in routine, that we could turn our minds off and be aimless in our observation. Perhaps the Lord’s Supper is especially challenging in this respect since the time is quiet and solemn, which seems to invite our minds to wander.  We need to combat this and train our minds for proper observance of the Lord’s Supper. In this article, we want to delve into a study of the Lord’s Supper so we are better equipped to offer worship to God as we partake of this weekly memorial meal. Read More

When Singing Is At Its Best

WORSHIP ARTICLE B. Colton McDaniel | Springfield, Illinois

“I love to sing.” This phrase was a warmup in my high school choir, but it is also the way I really feel about singing. My earliest memories are of singing Doo-wop songs. Yet as much as I loved performing with choirs growing up and no matter how fulfilling it was to earn good ratings at state competitions, no music is as pleasing as singing praises with the people of God. This is how God designed it. He created music to be naturally enjoyable to the human ear. But on top of that, He prescribed a combination of that naturally enjoyable activity with words of edification and praise to create psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Read More

The Difference Between Emotion And Emotionalism In Worship

WORSHIP ARTICLE William J. Stewart | Odessa, Ontario

The story has been told of a man who visited with a local church for their Sunday assembly. Upon hearing a powerful point from the pulpit, he hollered out, “Amen!” Everyone was quiet, somewhat taken back by his outburst. Minutes later, the preacher spoke mightily of the Lord’s victory over death, which prompted the man to give a hearty, “Praise the Lord!” Others in the crowd were visibly uncomfortable with these eruptions. After this second time, someone quietly went over to the man and whispered, “Why are you shouting out like that?” The visitor replied, “I’m praising God.” In response, he heard, “Well, we don’t do that here.” Read More

As we open our New Testament and begin to read we see that worship is an integral part of the Christian’s life. God desires for us to worship Him. Yet worship must be as He instructs. Jesus, in His conversation with the woman at the well, gives some vital information about one’s service to Jehovah. “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24). Notice at least three essential elements in our worship: (1) worship must be directed toward the Father; (2) worship must be with the right attitude – in spirit; (3) worship must be in the right way – according to truth. Prayer can be a challenging aspect of our worship to God. It requires concentration and focus. All our mental energy must be focused upon coming reverently before God’s throne, communicating our praises, fears, needs, and thanksgiving to the Creator of the universe. Praying to God is a blessing we have as Christians and it is an expression of adoration to God. Prayer is a time when we come face to face with our struggles, realizing our genuine need for God’s strength. Read More

On Psalms, Hymns And Spiritual Songs

There are few things in this world as precious as the sound of saints singing together in the assembly. In worship, it occupies a unique place. It is an expression of our emotions without the extreme of emotionalism. Singing is a form of teaching without the use of words alone. It combines elements of emotion and instruction to the praise and glory of God. We encounter the Song of Moses in Exodus, after the Hebrews were released from Egyptian bondage. The book of Revelation is filled with scenes of the heavenly hosts and saints in heaven singing. Emphasis on singing praise to God appears in the Bible from beginning to end, so we ought to carefully consider what God’s word has to say on this subject. Read More

The Difference Between Service And Worship

WORSHIP ARTICLE

There is a growing movement in the religious world to broaden what is commonly identified as worship. Rather than it being limited to specific activities, many are embracing the idea that worship is a lifestyle; that every moment of our existence is to be an occasion of worship. It is certainly true that we are to always be in service to God, but service and worship are not synonymous. There is an important distinction to be made. Read More

Why Should We Worship?

WORSHIP ARTICLE

Why should we worship God? That is a good question, not to be dismissed quickly or ignored. Billions around the world worship some deity, while others do not. Among atheists there is a growing number who question the rationale and sanity of God-worshipers: “What kind of self-serving, egotistical God,” they ask, “would demand people to grovel at His feet?” Such an understanding of God and of worship demonstrates an ignorance of the true God and worship. Worship is an appropriate, humbling-but-not-humiliating response to the nature and character of God Himself.

So, why should we worship God? Read More
